Republican Sam Caligiuri, the former state senator and candidate for Congress, announced today that he will not run for the 5th District seat in 2012.

Caligiuri, who lost to Democratic incumbent Chris Murphy in November, cited family obligations in his announcement that he won't be joining an increasingly crowded field.

"While my commitment to serving the people of Connecticut is stronger than ever, Lori and I have made the decision that I will not run for Congress in 2012,'' Caligiuri said. "With a young family, I believe that I must find a way to help make a difference in our state from closer to home than serving in Washington at this time would permit."

Murphy, who has held the seat since 2006, is running for U.S. Senate. Republicans Justin Bernier and Mark Greenberg, who lost the GOP primary to Caligiuri in 2010, have both announced they intend to run again.
