Gov. Dannel P. Malloy called Metro-North Railroad President Howard Permut Wednesday in hopes of finding "an immediate solution" to storm-related service reductions announced by Permut on the New Haven commuter line to New York City.

"Hailing from Fairfield County, I know all too well what a reduction in service or reliability on the New Haven line means for commuters in the area," Malloy said in a statement. No immediate fix emerged from the conference call that included interim state transportation Commissioner Jeffrey Parker and other Malloy lieutenants, but gubernatorial spokeswoman Colleen Flanagan said Malloy hopes his direct intervention will speed improvements. Permut has crews "working around the clock" to restore the normal number and frequency of trains, Malloy's office said.
