U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman is an observant Jew who has long honored the Sabbath as a day of rest and now he is writing a book about it.
"The Gift of Rest,'' which Lieberman is co-authoring with writer David Klinghoffer, will be published in August by Howard Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster.
The book was described by its publisher as both a history of the Sabbath through the ages, a practical how-to guide providing ways that readers of all faiths can incorporate Sabbath observance in their own lives and a personal and political memoir.
Lieberman does not work on the Sabbath and holidays, he said in an interview 10 years ago, not only because of its religious significance, but because ``it's meant a lot to my family and my peace of mind. The rituals that have been adopted over the generations that protect the Sabbath as a day of rest are important.''
Lieberman, a longtime Democrat who broke with the party in 2006 and ran as independent, announced last month that he will not seek reelection when his term ends in 2012.
