Political Reporter Ted Mann Leaves New London Day To Shadow Gov. Malloy For Long-Term, Year-Long Article

Political reporter Ted Mann has left The Day of New London to embark on an ambitious project shadowing Gov. Dannel P. Malloy for a long-term narrative article.

As a blogger and reporter, Mann has covered the political landscape for years, and insiders say that his departure has been a blow to The Day.

But Mann is still a familiar face in the halls of the state Capitol as he gathers string for his long-term story on Malloy.

A graduate of New York University, Mann will be writing for the Hearst newspapers as an employee for the company that publishes The Connecticut Post, The Danbury News Times, The Stamford Advocate, and out-of-state papers like The Albany Times Union. He will be operating under the provision that the information will not be published until near the end of the year.

Mann's project has been compared to the now-famous projects that Newsweek magazine began in 1984 when reporters were detached from the magazine and took a vow of secrecy in order to write a major story from the campaign trail that would not be published until after November's presidential election. The regular Newsweek reporters would still file stories for the weekly magazine, but none of the information gathered by the embedded reporters would be shared with the regular beat reporters.
