The state's Roman Catholic bishops are supporting Democratic Gov. Dannel Malloy's plan for an earned income tax credit to help the working poor.
The bishops, who have supported the EITC for years, said the plan to place money in the hands of working families will stimulate the economy.
"Providing tax relief to low-wage earners assists them in rising above the poverty level in a way that respects their human dignity,'' said Michael C. Culhane, the chief lobbyist for the Catholic Church at the state Capitol and the executive director of the Connecticut Catholic Public Affairs Conference, Inc. "The earned income tax credit rewards the work ethic, reduces child poverty, and allows those struggling financially in our society to meet their basic needs.''
