"Did you see the big news?" asks the breathless fundraising email from Kenny Curran, who is running Democrat Chris Murphy's Senate campaign.

"An independent poll by the Service Employees International Union and Daily Kos shows Chris with a lead in the primary and the highest favorable ratings among of any candidate in the race - Republican or Democrat,'' the email continues.

The release refers to the poll, conducted by Public Policy Polling for SEIU and the Daily Kos, showing Murphy beating Democratic rival Susan Bysiewicz 40 to 38 as well as potential GOP rivals Linda McMahon, Rob Simmons, Michael Fedele, Scott Frantz and Mark Boughton.

While some might question whether a poll commissioned by the powerful labor union and a liberal website is truly independent, PPP is generally a reliable firm, according to poll expert Nate Silver.

Meanwhile, Murphy's campaign revealed that it has an online fundraising goal of $30,000 from 300 individual donors by the end of the month. "Fundraising quarters are a point in time everyone looks to as a barometer of a campaign's progress and promise,'' Curran's email states. "And so far, we're doing quite well."
