Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Richard Blumenthal is launching a series of TV spots today that seek to portray him as an advocate for Connecticut residents.
Each of the three, 30-second ads feature everyday people talking about how Blumenthal "stood up to the most powerful interests,'' campaign manager Mindy Myers said in a release announcing the ads.
In each case, those "powerful interests" are insurance companies. The first ad features a Burlington woman and her young son, who was severely allergic to infant formula. The family's insurance company refused to cover the prescription formula he needed -- until Blumenthal intervened.
The second ad tells the story of a couple from Prospect. The husband was battling leukemia, but his health insurer would only cover the life-saving surgery he needed if it was performed in Washington state. Blumenthal's office got on the case and was able to get the insurance company to pay for the operation in Connecticut.
