In a change at the top of the masthead of one of the world's great newspapers, Jill Abramson has been named as the first female editor of The New York Times.
Abramson will have the title of executive editor, replacing the well-known Bill Keller as the leader of the newsroom. Keller, 62, is stepping down to become a writer for the Times Magazine and the opinion page - two roles that he has previously held.
Washington Bureau Chief Dean Baquet will take over the number 2 position as managing editor.
