Highway Rest Areas' Buildings To Close Under Malloy Plan

The Malloy administration went after highway rest areas again Friday for what the governor's office said would be more than $2 million in annual savings through its latest budget-balancing plan.

The proposal to the state legislature came a little more than a month after a key lawmaker's opposition led the administration to scrap its controversial plan to permanently close two I-84 rest areas in Willington right away -- and then to close all seven of Connecticut's noncommercial rest areas on interstate highways in the next two years.

This time around, only the buildings at the seven rest areas would close, and the rest areas would not be blocked off to travelers as previously planned.  The buildings include rest rooms and food vending machines. A Department of Transportation spokesman said there are no plans to place portable toilets in the areas.
