For the past 80 years, the Cos Cob Republican Clambake has been a must-go event for any aspiring Republican politician and for some of the state's top leaders.
More than two decades ago, U.S. Rep. Stewart McKinney of Fairfield was a regular at the bake, as was a young Republican named John Rowland who was trying to gain support to win statewide office.
Now, the chairman of the Greenwich Democratic Town Committee says the clambake violates the state's elections laws. Local Republicans scoff at the charge - less than two months before the local elections and a few days before Sunday afternoon's annual clambake.
