Small lapses or "significant" deficiencies?

A multi-year audit of Attorney General Richard Blumenthal's office, first reported by Hearst Newspapers' Ken Dixon, found "only isolated instances of administrative problems,'' according to Blumenthal's office.

But those "isolated instances" could be a sign of a much larger problem, auditor Robert G. Jaekle told Dixon.

The audit found "significant" deficiencies in monitoring employee comp time as well as the office's purchasing procedures. The report also found that costs for outside legal work exceeded contracted amounts.

Blumenthal's U.S. Senate bid is largely based on his performance as the state's attorney general for the past 20 years. He will likely be dogged by questions about how he has run the office as the campaign proceeds.
