Walter Lee, Jr., a veteran officer with the state Capitol Police, has been named the department's new chief.

Lee, a Manchester resident, was appointed by the leaders of the state legislature, who oversee the police force that patrols the Capitol, the Legislative Office Building and the surrounding grounds at the 17-acre complex.

After joining the force in March 1999, Lee was promoted to sergeant under then-Chief Billy Morgan in 2004 and then lieutenant under Chief Fallon in 2008.

The appointment came following a nationwide search and was announced Monday on the day of the General Assembly's annual veto session.
