Janet Peckinpaugh's congressional campaign sent out a press release this morning lashing out against 2nd District incumbent Joe Courtney for "choosing to play politics" with the Gulf oil spill.
The email was sent by Peckinpaugh spokesman Stephen Nocera, a campaign volunteer whose day job is adminstrative assistant to Torrington Mayor Ryan Bingham. A notation in the file containing the press release identifies its author as "Mayor's Office."
Asked about the notation today, Nocera said he used his work computer to send the email, but said he wrote it on his home computer. He said he sent it from his personal email account during his lunch hour.
Many municipalities bar government workers from using city equipment or resources for political purposes but it's unclear whether this violates any policy in Torrington.
