Fomer Massachusetts Gov. William Weld, a well-known moderate Republican, has endorsed Tom Foley of Greenwich for governor.

Weld's endorsement comes one month after former New York State Gov. George Pataki offered a similar endorsement for Foley, a major Republican fundraiser, Harvard College graduate, and former U.S. Ambassador to Ireland.

Foley is currently leading in the latest Quinnipiac University poll by 27 percentage points over Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele of North Stamford. Longtime business executive Oz Griebel of Simsbury, who placed third at the GOP convention last month, is running third in the poll.

Foley has poured at least $2 million of his own money into the gubernatorial campaign, while Fedele has not yet qualified for public financing because he has not yet raised $250,000 in small contributions of $100 or less. Fedele and his campaign have said multiple times that they expect to reach the fundraising threshold "within 10 days.''
