It turns out that Republican National Chairman Michael Steele -- who jousted verbally with reporters about GOP Senate candidate Linda McMahon during a lunchtime appearance in New Britain Thursday -- got himself into political trouble with comments he made later in the day at another stop he made in Connecticut.

At a GOP fundraiser in the Noank section of Groton, a YouTube video shows Steele saying of the war in Afghanistan: "This was a war of Obama's choosing." He also said: "This is not something the United States actively prosecuted or wanted to engage in."

In fact, the U.S. led a NATO coalition to invade Afghanistan after the 9/11 attacks during the administrationof President George W. Bush. and the public supported the move overwhelmingly. As CNN reports, part of Steele's trouble in the aftermath of Thursday's statement is that William Kristol -- the editor of the Weekly Standard and a leading national conservative voice -- has called publicly for Steele to step down.
