Poll wars

Democratic U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy's campaign has released its internal polling numbers, which show a decidedly different picture of the 5th District congressional race than the one painted by this week's CT Capitol Report poll (which showed Murphy lagging behind Republican challenger Sam Caligiuri.)

Murphy's new poll has him with a 14 point lead over Caligiuri, 48 to 34 percent.

"Chris has always known that this campaign would be competitive, considering the independent nature of the Fifth District,'' Murphy's campaign spokeswoman Kristen Bossi said in an email touting the new numbers. "With just a few weeks to go, these numbers show that Chris has strong and growing support, and people are responding to Chris' focus on job creation in the state."

Bossi also took a swipe at the CT Capitol Report poll, which was conducted by the Merriman River Group, a firm that uses automated computer technology. "These...polls are historically wildly inaccurate,'' Bossi said. "An automated computer survey can't tell who is actually picking up the phone - a registered voter in the Fifth District, or a voter's 10 year old cousin visiting from South Carolina.''
