In an editorial in Sunday's newspaper, The Hartford Courant is endorsing Democrat Richard Blumenthal in the hard-fought U.S. Senate race over Republican Linda McMahon.
McMahon, the former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment, has already spent more than $40 million on her race - the highest total in the history of Senate races in Connecticut.
The endorsement says that McMahon "doesn't have Mr. Blumenthal's depth or breath of knowledge on essential matters such as foreign affairs and the law. She has avoided straight talk on issues such as Social Security, which isn't sustainable on its current path. (Mr. Blumenthal also avoids straight talk by saying Social Security "seems to be financially on strong ground right now" and opposing "any reduction in the present Social Security commitment.") She has a spotty history of voting in elections.''
It continues, "Yet Mrs. McMahon is persuasive, tenacious, not to be underestimated. She would make a great business advocate for Connecticut whether elected to the Senate or drafted into such service by the state.
''Mr. Blumenthal, however, has a remarkable record of working within government to help people. His help is now needed to get them jobs.''
