Peruvian President Alan Garcia says that Yale University has agreed to return artifacts collected from the ancient Inca ruins of Machu Picchu, potentially ending a long dispute.

CNN reports that Garcia said a Yale representative pledged in a meeting Friday to return a collection of artifacts collected nearly a century ago.

"The Peruvian government is grateful for this decision and recognizes that Yale University conserved these parts and pieces that otherwise would have been dispersed in private collections throughout the world, and perhaps would have disappeared," CNN reported that Garcia said in a statement.

But Yale wasn't willing to go that far, in a statement issued Saturday. The university's public affairs office said that Yale President Richard Levin believes that representatives of the university and Peru have reached "a constructive framework for an agreement," with details yet to be finalized.
