Three days before the centennial of former President Ronald Reagan's birth, Democrat-turned-independent Sen. Joseph Lieberman had some glowing words for the conservative icon.

"The optimism, moral clarity, and confidence that President Reagan radiated inspired a generation,'' Lieberman said on the floor of the Senate this afternoon.

"In 1980, Ronald Reagan promised to 'Make America Great Again' - and he did.  He expressed with total confidence that those who challenged our hard-won freedoms would collapse - and they did.  He led our country and the free world to victory in the Cold War against Soviet communism, and never doubted for a moment that America and our cause could and would prevail...

"At a time when we face many challenges both at home and abroad, and when it has unfortunately become fashionable to suggest that our best days as a nation are behind us, President Ronald Reagan's optimism and his abiding faith in America are more important to remember than ever before.  They are as wise as they are true."

And speaking of Reagan, Kevin Rennie has been compiling some of the highlights of the former president's career on his blog, Daily Ructions. Among the tidbits Rennie has posted are excerpts of Reagan's speeches and some fascinating vintage TV ads. Check them out here
