Greenwich Republican L. Scott Frantz: Charging State Sales Tax On Currently Tax-Free Haircuts Is A Bad Idea

Greenwich Sen. L. Scott Frantz doesn't like much about Gov. Dannel Malloy's tax package.

A fiscally conservative Republican, Frantz has voted often against tax increases in his relatively brief tenure in the legislature, and he is strongly against lowering the threshold for the estate tax. Currently, the first $3.5 million of an estate is tax-free - meaning that a person who dies with $3.49 million owes no tax. Malloy is proposing to drop that threshold to $2 million.

But Frantz is also concerned about the expansion of the state sales tax on items that are currently tax-free.

"If we keep that tax on haircuts and beauty salons, we're going to see a lot of bad hair days coming up,'' Frantz said.

Noting that some humor is needed as the state's fiscal problems are so large, Frantz said, "We need it desperately around here.''
