A division of the Volvo car manufacturer was fined by OSHA for 17 serious safety violations on the same day that Gov. Dannel P. Malloy toured the Newington plant.
Malloy's office had been unaware of the pending violations before he headed to the plant Tuesday afternoon. Malloy was touring the plant at the very moment when OSHA announced more than $83,000 in fines, but OSHA's regional office in Boston said the timing was purely a coincidence.
Volvo Aero, a division which manufactures parts for airplane engines, declined to comment.
