An official in a union local representing state Department of Correction workers spoke out Saturday, blasting leaders of the coalition that negotiated a proposed labor concessions agreement with the Malloy administration and explaining his members' reasons for "resoundingly" rejecting the deal in a vote on Thursday.
Moises Padilla, vice president of local 387 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, issued a strongly worded statement Saturday, as the 45,000 unionized state workers remained in the midst of voting, union by union, on whether to ratify the newly negotiated agreement. The voting ends next Friday.
"Governor Malloy and his inner circle of representatives did nothing to alleviate this situation, but inflame the passions of those whom they were trying to court by publicly disrespecting, vilifying, attempting to intimidate and coerce into a YES VOTE with repeated threats of layoffs," Padilla said in his e-mailed statement to reporters. His local, the Cheshire Correctional Complex Employees Unit, represents more than 600 workers.
