Former comptroller general David Walker says he's being "aggressively recruited" to run for U.S. Senate from Connecticut.

"A number of people believe with my background, with my nationwide support, that I would be effective on Day 1 and I think they're right,'' Walker said during a phone interview yesterday. "A lot of people are encouraging me to run [but] I'm not going to rush into any decisions.''

Among those pushing Walker to run, he says, is the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Walker, a Democrat-turned-Republican-turned-political independent, says his "results-oriented," common sense fiscal outlook would be a huge boon in the current political climate.

The drama over the debt negotiations in Washington, and Connecticut's financial problems, have led many voters to distrust the major parties, Walker said. "The political process is dominated by wingnuts on the far right and the far left,'' he said.

Issues relating to government spending and fiscal responsibility, which Walker has focused on, will likely be at the top of the policy agenda for the 2012 campaign.
