Himes to USPS: Don't touch our post offices

U.S. Rep. Jim Himes is making a plea to preserve several post offices in his district slated for potential closure.

Himes, a Democrat from the 4th District, wrote to the U.S. Postal Services asking that three local branches remain open. "I'm frustrated to have received notice that a number of local post offices are again under consideration for closure,'' Himes said.

The branches--Noble and Barnum in Bridgeport and Glenbrook in Stamford--serve some of the region's most economically disadvantaged citizens and closing them would surely harm the business climate in those neighborhoods, he said.

The postal service, which does not get tax money to fund its operations, says the branch closings are designed to save money.

But, says Himes, "While we look for savings throughout the federal government, we must choose wisely where to cut. Local businesses and families depend on these offices because of their access to public transportation and as anchors for economic activity in the area, and I will fight as hard as I did two years ago to keep them open."
