As the state employee unions wait to vote on a new deal, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced Wednesday that he has now issued more than 3,000 layoff notices in more than 30 departments and agencies.

The notices have been increasing recently, including 1,157 since last week. The overall total is now 3,008.

Although thousands have received their notices, fewer than 160 state employees will have actually left their jobs by the end of this week. But that will be changing. There is clearly some built-in breathing room during the next three weeks when state employees will be voting on the revised concessions deal with Malloy.

The largest number of employees - 1,872 - would not officially leave their jobs until the week of August 22. That includes 57 rookie state troopers who have a six-week advance notification in their contract.

So far, two employees left their jobs in June and two more left the week of July 18. Another 154 are leaving this week, and 88 will leave next week. In addition, 263 would leave during the week of August 8, and 84 on August 15. As such, the actual departures during the week of August 22 would dwarf any previous numbers.

Another 489 would leave the week of August 29, and a combined total of 49 would leave in the three weeks after that.

Two union spokesmen, who have been avoiding the limelight lately after constantly holding press conferences at the state Capitol on almost a daily basis as part of the Matt and Larry Show, could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
