While the last union ballots are cast in a vote that could help define his governorship, Dannel P. Malloy on Wednesday will be traveling the capital region for two stops on his rolling jobs tour and a speaking engagement at a back-to-school conference of superintendents.
The window for unionized state workers to vote on the $1.6 billion savings and concessions deal closes tonight, and the results are scheduled to be announced midday Thursday. If the state employee unions fail to ratify the agreement, Malloy has said, he will have no choice but to lay off more than 6,000 state workers and cut state services to help bridge the $1.6 billion gap.
This morning, Malloy was scheduled to address top school officials from around Connecticut at the state Department of Education's Back-to-School Conference for Superintendents at Rentschler Field in East Hartford. At 11 a.m., he is scheduled to visit UTC Power in South Windsor in the next stop on his statewide jobs tour. Then, at 1 p.m., the same tour takes him to Billings Forge Community Works in Hartford to meet with the Greater Hartford Arts Council.
