The highly controversial eminent domain case of Susette Kelo in New London is becoming a television movie.
The movie will be based on a book by maverick author Jeff Benedict, who once ran unsuccessfully as a Democrat for Congress in the Second Congressional District. Famed actress Brooke Shields will play Kelo.
The case generated controversy in Connecticut and across the country after the United States Supreme Court voted, 5 to 4, to allow the houses in the neighborhood to be taken by eminent domain in order to pave the way for a commercial development.
But the development was never built, even after all of the houses were either knocked down or moved.
The issue flared up at the state Capitol as state Republicans immediately wanted to change the state's laws regarding eminent domain. But the Democrats who controlled the legislature at the time said that the issue needed to be studied and blocked any immediate votes.
