The Courant's editorial board has endorsed former Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy in the Democratic nominating primary for governor, and Greenwich businessman Tom Foley in the Republican gubernatorial primary. Both primary votes are Aug. 10.

Both Courant-endorsed gubernatorial candidates were the ones endorsed for the nominations by delegates at their respective party conventions in May.

In an editorial recommending Foley to voters over his two GOP challengers -- Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele of Stamford and longtime business executive R. Nelson "Oz" Griebel -- the newspaper's editorial board said that Foley "has the top business management, reorganization and public service experience that the state could use at this anxious moment.  He also has the toughness to make painful but necessary changes in government."

In a separate editorial recommending Malloy over his Democratic challenger -- Greenwich cable TV entrepreneur Ned Lamont -- the board said that Malloy is "the better choice for the challenges ahead in a state rich in assets but high in energy costs, with the worst 20-year jobs record in the nation, poor public transportation, a slippage in school quality and a scary budget crisis looming next year."
