Remember Chester Harris, the Republican school board member from Haddam who believes schools ought to offer alternatives to Darwin's teachings on evolution?

He's now running for the state House of Representatives. But Harris' platform has nothing to do with questions about the origins of human life -- the self-described fiscal conservative is focusing on the economy and the state budget.

"I can come up with a fresh look at things,'' said Harris, who is running in the 36th District against 5-term Democratic incumbent James Spallone of Essex. "I'm not the man with all the answers, I just have the resolve to throw politics out the window and be a representative.''

Harris says his commitment to fiscal restraint starts with his own campaign: he's pledging not to spend more than $1,000 on his bid (thus far, he's laid out about $700.)

"Instead spending more, we have to find resourceful ways to use the dollars we do have,'' Harris said.
