The bane of the videotape

Just 10 days ago, Linda McMahon spokesman Ed Patru titled one of his well-written daily missives to reporters "Videotape Evidence: The Bane of Dick Blumenthal's Existence.''

But the tape making news today just might be the bane of McMahon's existence. The DC paper Roll Call uncovered video of McMahon speaking to a local tea party group in April. She was asked about World Wrestling Entertainment's lobbying expenditures. McMahon led the company until September of 2009, when she stepped down as CEO to run for U.S. Senate.

"[I]n terms of lobbying dollars in Washington, I have not spent lobbying dollars in Washington," she said. "I have worked with Congress on Smackdown Your Vote and other kinds of projects and programs there."

But Roll Call points out that from 2001 to 2008, WWE spent at least $680,000 to lobby Congress.

Patru told Roll Call McMahon "probably could have been more precise."

But isn't that what the Blumenthal camp said regarding his "misstatements" about his Vietnam record?

"At times when I have sought to honor veterans, I have not been as clear or precise as I should have been about my service in the Marine Corps Reserves,'' Blumenthal said back in May, during the heat of the controversy.
